My Background

Over the past 20+ years, I’ve had the privilege of working with many different clients in a wide variety of settings, preparing me to work effectively with virtually anyone who comes to therapy committed to working toward healing. My individual clients include those who wish to work on improving their lives in any number of ways — dealing with a mental health diagnosis; making decisions about career, work, or family; or pursuing a more satisfying, authentic, and fulfilling approach to life and living. I work with couples of all different ages, stages, and compositions, and enjoy working with both heterosexual and same-sex couples. I frequently help couples facing issues including communication challenges, infidelity, loss of passion, infertility, parenting struggles, and many others. Dating and engaged couples often see me to discuss ways to strengthen their relationships, and make decisions about whether and when to solidify their commitment. I work with many couples struggling to decide if and how to continue to work on deeply troubled relationships. I see families wishing to deal with family communication issues, identifying and maintaining appropriate boundaries within relationships, and working through separation and divorce in a way that maintains family harmony.
I am also trained in Medical Family Therapy, which means that I work frequently with individual, couples, and families facing medical (and especially genetic) challenges. I have worked with many families in which a potentially harmful genetic mutation is present, helping them to understand and decide about how to cope with that risk. My pre- and post-doctoral training as a clinician and researcher at the National Cancer Institute afforded me the opportunity to deeply understand relationship and behavioral issues in individuals, couples, and families coping with hereditary cancer syndromes, as well as other serious disease and illness. Issues addressed include reproductive decision-making, navigating the complex process of communicating with loved ones about genetic risk, finding one’s voice in the healthcare system, and many others. Health issues I have worked with previously include BRCA (breast and ovarian cancer), Li-Fraumeni Syndrome, Familial Testicular Cancer, HNPCC, Cystic Fibrosis, Huntington’s Disease, Down Syndrome, and Tay-Sachs.
During my career, I have had opportunities to speak to both local and national audiences about coping with mood disorders, emotionally and physically abusive relationships, living with hereditary cancer risk, and collaborative care in treating couples and families with hereditary cancer syndromes. My work has been published in a number of scholarly journals, and I have taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at the University of Maryland and Marymount University. I am a Clinical Fellow of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), and have served on the Executive Board of the Middle-Atlantic Division of that organization since 2008 (including a term as President in 2015-2016). I also maintain professional memberships in the Collaborative Family Healthcare Association (CFHA) and the National Council on Family Relations.
About Me. Therapy is serious work, but that doesn’t mean every moment has to feel somber. I find that warm, empathetic humor can be a powerful tool in working through many of the painful situations that we might face together in therapy. I do my best to bring to each session the ideal that kindness and a light heart can be healing. I enjoy the opportunity to form honest, meaningful relationships with my clients, and can honestly say that I am passionate about my work and look forward to coming to my office each day. I consider it a great privilege to be invited into my clients’ lives and relationships, and find the experience of making a positive difference to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of the therapy room, I love to read, travel, exercise, and be with my family — I am married and have a daughter (Claire) and a son (Henry).
